INTRODUCTION SHEPHERD'S-PURSE
Shepherd's-purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) is a dicot weed in the Brassicaceae family.  In Denmark this weed first evolved resistance to Group 2 (Legacy B) herbicides in 2012 and infests Spring Barley.   Group 2 (Legacy B) herbicides are known as Inhibition of Acetolactate Synthase (Inhibition of Acetolactate Synthase ).  Research has shown that these particular biotypes are resistant to florasulam, and tribenuron-methyl and they may be cross-resistant to other Group 2 (Legacy B) herbicides.

GENERAL

ALS resistant CAPBP was sampled in 2012 in spring barley. The field was sprayed with sulfonylureas 4 of 5 preceding years and crops established by reduced tillage. The susceptibility to tribenuron and florasulam was examined in pot experiments with 6 doses, and compared to a susceptible reference. The results showed a high level of resistance to tribenuron (RI=75) and a low level of resistance to florasulam (4<RI<10).

TSR analysis showed a heterozygous mutation at Trp-574 of the ALS gene.

Confirmation Tests

Greenhouse, and Laboratory trials comparing a known susceptible Shepherd's-purse biotype with this Shepherd's-purse biotype have been used to confirm resistance. For further information on the tests conducted please contact the local weed scientists that provided this information.
 
Genetics

Genetic studies on HRAC Group 2 resistant Shepherd's-purse have not been reported to the site.  There may be a note below or an article discussing the genetics of this biotype in the Fact Sheets and Other Literature
 
Mechanism of Resistance

Studies on the mechanism of resistance of Group 2 (Legacy B) resistant Shepherd's-purse from Denmark indicate that resistance is due to an altered target site.  There may be a note below or an article discussing the mechanism of resistance in the Fact Sheets and Other Literature
 
Relative Fitness
